About: Confessions of a Furniture Junkie

I have an addiction. I can’t stop looking at furniture. I look at it, daydream about it, obsess over it, have fallings out with it and promptly make up. Furniture and I go back a long way. I spent seven years as the store manager for a national home decor store. When I left the company, it didn’t lessen the addiction. It got worse.

OK, it isn’t just furniture. I’m in love with all aspects of interior design and have been since childhood. The thing is, as much as I love design, there is one style that I just never got the hang of. Modern contemporary design has always sort of baffled me. I viewed it as cold, unapproachable, unrealistic, boring and frankly, pretentious. I was wrong.

I don’t know what happened. My wife tried to convince me, years ago, that modern design was preferable to the textile and accessory laden style I favored. I resisted stubbornly. A contemporary design loving friend extolled the virtues of modern furniture to me. I turned up my nose and refused to budge. Honestly, I don’t know what happened. Somewhere between a chaise lounge and a chiffonrobe, I discovered a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair, and things haven’t been the same since.

That said, I really have a lot of catching up to do. The modern design esthetic is so different from my old favorites, and I have so diligently separated myself from it, that even the old classics are brand new to me. Fortunately, I have my furniture addiction to appease, and I have no problem with learning to understand contemporary design one Le Corbusier at a time.

This weblog will help chronicle my journey to a better understanding of clean lines, minimal fluff and good design. As some who love me might say, It’s About Time!

Hi,

I know that you always like to hear about the latest in furniture design and I thought you might be interested in learning more about Martin Ross’ Flitch Work Designs. The Australian-based designer combines the precise craftsmanship of European furniture construction and the unique, exotic style of Southeast Asian furniture design to handcraft unique pieces of furniture based upon clients’ space and purpose. All Flitch Work Designs furniture is crafted from a single piece of downed and reclaimed timber, thus allowing Ross to base his design around the tree’s original form and the orientation of original cuts on the log. Finally, Ross’ eye for detail and insistence on grain-matching make each of his finished products a functional piece of art.

If you would like more information or jpegs, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,
Donna
